This Week's Hosts: Mick Savage, Liam and Sean, with Showfriend (Henchman?) Conrad Kinch

This week, the party discuss Tutorial Scenarios in RPGs, and which examples they think are best for teaching players and GMs about individual games and RPGs in general.

Show Notes (And links, but beware of spoiling yourself):

  • 1:59: We're such a cohesive team.

  • 3:20: Food Fight, an introductory scenario for Shadowrun

  • 3:50: For Call of Cthulhu: The Haunting, Paper Chase, and Edge of Darkness

  • 4:50: For D&D 5th Edition: Lost Mines of Phandelver, found in the Starter Set, and Dragon of Icespire Peak, found in the Essentials Kit

  • 6:58: Tomb of the Serpent Kings, by one ‘Skerples’. One of the good OSR bloggers, I heartily recommend reading his stuff. There’s a link on the sidebar to where you can purchase a print copy.

  • 11:29: Conrad shows his old-school sensibilities

  • 12:03: So Cohesive.

  • 13:40: The compilation book is Tales from the Yawning Portal. I’m not sure whether Liam is referencing the first scenario, The Sunless Citadel, where there are a lot of goblins but only a few of them are meant to be combatants (but actually going into the goblin hall is suicide), or the second, Forge of Fury, which is infamous for forcing the PCs into a mad dash against the orc sentries trying to wake up the entire tribe (unless you find another way in than the front door).

  • 17:35: The Matt Mercer Effect, discussed in our Episode on Actual Play

  • 21:55: Dungeoneer from Advanced Fighting Fantasy. One of the supplements for this was the first proper RPG book I owned, but by the time I found a copy I had already moved on to my cousins copy of ‘Black Box’ Basic D&D (which I personally think had a much better ‘Learn how to play and GM through the medium of a choose your own adventure’ example).

  • 24:22: Kidnap The Archpriest, again by Skerples

  • 26:09: BECMI, also known as Mentzer D&D, was the 3rd version of Basic D&D, which was TSRs money-maker while Gygax was busy with AD&D

  • 27:46: I’d be flattered that Savage was hallucinating my presence if it weren’t so creepy
