This week's hosts: Liam, Eoin, Icecream, Humbug

In any industry, the line between mainstream and indie gets pretty blurred. In an industry as small as RPGs, that line can be totally invisible. This week, we discuss what makes an indie RPG and what makes a “studio” RPG. If that topic doesn't excite you, there are also gunshots and an explosion. Seriously.

Show notes:

  • 1.24: Well, Liam's answered the question! We can all go home now.
  • 3.38: Well, Humbug's answered the question! We can all go home now.
  • 4.25: My God, our choice of musicians to discuss really pins an age on us.
  • 5.11: And we shall call this the Humbug Page Count Theory. I love it.
  • 6.09: And we shall call this the Humbug Campaign Theory. I tolerate it.
  • 6.39: “I'm Detective Morrisson, Stop Bad Mutants Division” “That's a very... accurate name”
  • 6.50: Interesting thing about Becoming Heroes – I looked up the company who made it, Transeptune, and they have three separate RPGs available with a few more in the work. This is what we were talking about earlier; even small RPG producers who do things in their spare time can have a stable of titles.
  • 23.48: Uh oh, I've had some ideas. That usually spells disaster.
  • 25.52: Quote of the Episode:

“But surely, Baron, you're mistaken; the moon wasn't invented until 10 years AFTER the events you've described!”

“It wasn't Earth's moon, it was Mars' moon, which of course then was in orbit above the Earth”

“Oh, my apologies”

  • 31.11: Well, Icecream's answered the question! We can all go home now.

Recorded at live at Ireland's biggest anime convention! This week, the Adventuring Party brings you its panel discussion from Eirtakon, where we talked about the Japanese table-talk RPG, Ryuutama. And I guess we answered a few audience questions as well. And we talked about bad-tempered elephants.

Show notes:

  • 1.45: Ryuutama
  • 3.46: Pro Tip: “Misplaced commas or absent, commas are how you break any game”
  • 5.18: Oh crap, Graham's asking the hard questions.
  • 6.08: Stu asked if “Table-Talk RPG” was a typo – apparantly not, according to this wikipedia article which claims RPGs “are called table-talk RPG, TTRPG or TRPG in Japan to distinguish them from the video role-playing game genre.”
  • 6.28: Ha ha, Pat's old. Wait! I'M OLD! Awww...
  • 11.27: For those eagle-eared listeners who heard the clink of glass in the background there, there were a few reprobates hanging around the back of our panel room who were still there from the Cocktails Panel that had just finished, and spent our entire panel getting very politely and quietly drunk. Heroes, all.
  • 15.23: I can't believe I didn't make the Magic Farmer joke. Did you hear about the Magic Farmer? He went down the road and turned into a field.
  • 17.57: Oddjob's hat is awesome
  • 25.05: Crystal Chronicles
  • 34.57: This one's for you, Stephen!
  • 37.00: For those who are wondering what love hotels are. I feel the name is fairly explanatory, though.
  • 37.09: That guy was very quiet, but his question was if we had encountered other story-heavy games, particularly Nobilis and Chuubo's Marvelous Wish-Granting Engine

This week's hosts: Liam, Graham, Eoin

This week on the Adventuring Party we venture forth once again into the trackless wastes of the mailbag, scouring out only the finest listener questions to bring to your ears. Today we discuss particular pet peeves we have in RPGs.

Show notes:

  • 1.07: Ken and Robin talk about stuff
  • 3.25: The Black Crusade books about the Chaos God
  • 4.33: Nurgle was always my favourite Chaos God, expressley because he IS happy all the time, and genuinely looks out for his followers. After he's finished giving them horrifying diseases, he takes care of them. I call him “Big Papa Nurgle”.
  • 6.22: Up until now it's been a very interesting conversation about fantasy theology, but if you want to skip straight to the meat of the topic, it starts here.
  • 12.31: Well, I wouldn't say I play Pathfinder. I've played Pathfinder.
  • 14.51: Liam is referring to E6 here, a style of playing DnD where you stop levelling once you hit 6, apart from feats
  • 16.33: Service guarantees Citizenship!
  • 24.31: Hilariously, my cleric is a specialised one that uses a sword, so I'd still be screwed
  • 29.23: People get fed hemlock for that kind of thing
  • 31.42: Oh my God, Graham, that's the best idea ever!
  • 34.41: Elven Entanglement always makes me think of Quantum Entanglement, which makes me think of Terry Pratchett's theory about faster-than-light communications by virtue of torturing a small king. “All right, when you guys are ready to go, punch your Elf right in the nuts. Right in the nuts.”
  • 39.12: Quote of the Episode: “Well, it's a bit railroady. There's a beginning, an end and also, I'm terrified to report... a middle!”

This week, the Adventuring Party reviews a very gentle and terribly entertaining sounding game about growing beautiful bamboo gardens while they are being ravaged by a hungry (and occasionally terrified) Panda. Good times, good times.

Show notes:

  • 0.45: Here we encounter one of those funny rules about almost all boardgames ever. You see that bit on the boardgame box there, where it tells how long the game is going to take? Top Tip: that is a lie.
  • 1.14: I was going to edit that bit out, but Eoin shouting “Zut alors!” was amusing so I left it in. Apparently no-one says zut alors in France anymore, it would be like an English person saying “Od's Bodkin!”
  • 6.30: A trait I've often longed for myself.
  • 7.49: Take no ko is the Japanese name for edible bamboo shoots, the favoured food of the Panda. Eoin also says this at the 11.00 mark, but I am unable to see the future so I can't unlook that up and I like to show my work.
  • 18.15: LIGHTNING STRIKES! For appropriate soundtrack, click here
  • 27.31: Quote of the Episode: “I was actually going to go to the Dark Horse last week, but thankfully when I was half-way there Oscar Schindler put me on a train and sent me to Poland”
  • 29.32: I'm pretty screwed, then.
  • 31.39: Top marks, Graham, top marks.
  • 33.14: Bride of Quote of the Episode: “My dogs in RPGs are always called Trouble; wherever he went, Trouble followed behind!”
  • 33.50: Here's Eoin's list of games. Have a look at the links, and let us know if there's one of them in particular you want to hear about! Drop us a line at our Irish Gaming page or on Facebook:

Lagoon: Land of Druids

Wield: A Little Game about Ancient Powers

Galaxy Defenders

Xia: Legends of a Drift System

Tiny Epic Kingdoms

Golem Arcana

This week's hosts: Liam, Graham, Eoin and Special Guest Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan

On the Adventuring Party this week, we interview Irish game writer Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan about an upcoming publication from Pelgrance Press; the Dracula Dossier for Night's Black Agents, the game of spies vs vampires.

Show notes:

  • 1.00: “Who you are and what you've done”. What have you done, Gar. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!? YOU MONSTER!
  • 1.06: The Kickstarter has, in fact, been live for several days now. Check it out! Also, it has already made over 300% of it's goal, which is damn impressive. Gratz, guys!
  • 1.17: Night's Black Agents
  • 2.00: The GUMSHOE RPG system
  • 5.01: Quote of the Episode: “They're a bit crap, how could they have infiltrated us? Wait a moment, there was that mind-controlling Vampire guy a few years ago... maybe he's involved.”
  • 17.07: At the £10,000 tier, they will bind your books in the skin of your worst childhood enemy.
  • 19.06: Spoilers! Okay, the book's out nearly 120 years, but still! Spoilers!
  • 22.41: Ok, “Conspyramid” is the best name for anything, ever. Even better than Snood, and Snood is an hilarious name.
  • 30.21: There was a slight mistake there, in that it's actually the One Shots podcast which has Ken running the game, which you can listen to here.
  • 31.23: The original book did look horrible.
  • 32.29: It will BADASSICAL and have SASSITUDE
  • 36.16: FATE? What? Who's talking about FATE? Damn your eyes!
  • 37.42: I saw this in action for Numenera; the character sheet in the Numenera rulebook is BALLS, but there are nice versions on-line made by the community.
  • 38.48: You'll find the link above, at the 1.06 mark. What's that? I should put it here as well? No, I don't think I'll be doing that. It's wasteful. Of, uh, electrons. And link-juice. Link-juice is what they use to power hyper-links. Every time you click a hyper-link, it consumes a tiny amount of precious, precious link-juice. Very hard stuff to make, you see, it needs to be made in a zero gravity environment, with magnets and stuff. On, uh, on the moon. SO THERE.

This week's hosts: Icecream, Graham, Humbug, Shane and Eoin

This week is the Adventuring Party's 300th Episode! We have released an episode every Wednesday, without fail, for almost 6 years now. I'm proud to have been a part of this. Thanks for listening, everyone! Here's to another 300 episodes.

What special madness do we have cooked up for you this week, you ask? It's the Gaelcon 2014 review – recorded at Gaelcon itself!

Show notes:

  • 3.11: Starship Artemis. It should be noted that the guy who ran Starship Artemis all weekend brought such a huge degree of fun to the Con, improved so many people's weekends, and worked so hard that he was awarded the Spirit of Gaelcon. Well done, Robb!
  • 4.55: Quote of the Episode: “What next? Dogs and cats living together as man and wife?”
  • 8.46: Eoin's card, Hida O-Win. Eoin has appeared in at least one other gaming product, as (if memory serves) Battlin' Bob Burke, Mayor of Chicago. How many other games will he invade before his mad lust for power is sated? #StopEoinBeforeItsTooLate
  • 16.47: 44? 44!
  • 17.13: Andorians.
  • 18.52: None of those words were words.
  • 21.25: This guy's first LARP... for which he won the Best LARP Award from Gaelcon! So it only seems appropriate to name him here: Shane Carr.
  • 22.56: I prefer “aeroplaning” to “flying”. I “car” places frequently. I would have said “bicycle”, but people do actually say that they bicycle to places.
  • 24.51: Son of Quote of the Episode: “Leave now! *maching gun cocking*” “And take your Tommy Guns and satchel bombs with you!”
  • 25.24: It's interesting that “unwinnable” made Shane and Humbug happy, and myself and Graham were less enthused.
  • 26.53: Bride of the Son of Quote of the Episode: “Exterminatus Gunners don't have half a button!”
  • 35.03: Xia: Legends of a Drift System - it is, unfortunately, not a game about a universe where everything is settled through drift racing.
  • 36.54: About 1 in 20, I reckon
  • 37.17: Having been told we had NO TIME left, we really hurried along... and only blathered for another 15 mins.
  • 51.36: I am ENTIRELY WRONG there – they're like the Quarians from Mass Effect. Got my fictional species mixed up!
