The Adventuring Party
Discussing table-top and related gaming and the Irish gaming scene so you don't have to.

This week's hosts: Icecream, Humbug and Oisin

This week we bring you what very well may be the first in a sporadic series of reviews of VERY old games. Older than your grandparents. Older than THEIR grandparents, if possible. Oisin brought along a very, very cool game called Fletcher Pratt's Naval Wargame, which you better damn well play with monocles and brandy. Interestingly, Fletcher Pratt did some writing with L. Sprague De Camp, whom he met through his wargaming group.

Show notes:

Due to technical difficulties, there are no show notes for this episode. There are,  however, links to images of items Oisin brought for the review:

The turny-gubbin, movement measure and aiming arrow.

A line of shells hitting the water, represented by golf tees.

This week's hosts: Liam, Humbug, Eoin and Graham

On the Adventuring Party this week, the guys take you down the loathsome path of madness, through the blasphemous garden of irrelevance, and into the squamous shed of desolation. Which is where they keep their copy of the Mythos boardgame, Eldritch Horror. Listen on, in squamous horror!

Show notes:

Eldtrich Horror website

  • 54.5: Arkham Horror  and Elder Sign. Also, here's a link to a YouTube video about Elder Signs and flying polyps in the style of a medicine advertisement. It's very good!

  • 23.46: When the cards are wrong, the stars are right.

  • 29.42: Son of Quote of the Episode: “Is throwing dynamite at a maniac a good idea?” “It's an awesome idea!”

Boardgames, boardgames, boardgames! Well, just one boardgame. But it's a doozy. This week, the Adventuring Party reviews the award-winning A Few Acres of Snow, with particular attention to that glorious magical artifact the Halifax Hammer. It's a +8 hammer that ruins your game.

Show notes:

  • 0.37: A Few Acres of Snow
  • 0.59: "You know that these two nations are at war about a few acres of snow” - Voltaire. He seems to have used this phrase as often as possible when referring to Canada. He didn't like it much.
  • 1.37: Jenkin's ear itself was displayed before the British Parliament. Seriously!
  • 2.39: Gah! The scourge of Deck Building games continues unabated! Is nothing safe?
  • 4.48: What does it, Kiff?
  • 10.55: How do you “mitigate” small settlements? Introduce them to Monsieur le Torched To The Ground?
  • 16.05: For Eoin, the Hammer is not a boardgame strategy (concerning rumours that there was a 15 minute break in editing while I watched an episode of Dr. Horrible... you might very well think that, I couldn't possibly comment. Damn it, now I want to watch House of Cards).
  • 18.16: Mythotopia
  • 18.56: Quote of the Episode: “I would honestly be less interested in this if it was A Few Acres of An Asteroid”
  • 25.59: He's doing it again!
  • 27.25: Son of Quote of the Episode: “Ugg can do nothing about Turn 1 attack from Russia. Ugg must just accept that Germany get crippled”
  • 29.54: Alphabetised location cards are the sign of a sick mind.
  • 31.17: Ah, Humbug, you glorious curmudgeon!
